There is a lot of information available about AHAs, what they do and don’t do.
We were wondering what you’d like to know the most, and we guessed ‘what can they do for me,’ so that’s the topic of this blog. We’ll do our best to explain how they work so you can make an educated decision while looking for your ideal product.
~ What are Alpha Hydroxy Acids, and what do they do?
A brief overview: AHAs and BHAs are often derived from natural sources, but they can also be synthesized and mimicked in nature thanks to technological advances.
- Glycolic acid –from sugar cane
- Lactic acid – sour milk
- Malic acid – apples
- Citric acid – citrus fruits
- Tartaric acid – grape wine
- Mandelic acid – almonds
~ Should I be concerned about applying acid to my skin?
The reality is that we are constantly surrounded by acidic and alkaline materials. The protective barrier on our skin has a ph of 5–5.5 and is essential for keeping skin moisturized and retaining water.
~ What are Alpha Hydroxy Acids effects on skin?
1. The skin is naturally exfoliated and moisturized by AHAs.
2. The stratum corneum is a protective layer on the skin’s surface made up of dead skin cells and keratin. It’s necessary because it protects the skin, but it may look dull and grey if it’s too thick.
3. AHAs will get through this layer and eat away at the substances that hold skin cells together, causing dead cells to detach and fall away. They exfoliate dead skin cells more effectively than a physical exfoliant alone.
4. They also promote skin cell regeneration and resurfacing, making the skin looks smoother and healthier. It is also believed that they help stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin giving skin elasticity and suppleness.
5. The AHAs with small molecules, such as glycolic and lactic acid, are the best for penetrating. Since the larger molecules do not penetrate as deeply, they are thought to be gentler on the skin.
6. AHAs are also humectants (moisturizers) because they attract water through the skin. If your skin is dry, AHAs may be more suitable, while BHAs are more likely to be effective if you have clogged pores, spots, or acne.
